Discover Saint-Brieuc's natural treasures and another facet of wild Brittany
A coastal city that cannot be missed
The Bay of Saint-Brieuc experiences the 5th highest tides in the world. It is also one of the largest nature reserves of France. Located only a few minutes walk from your accommodation, it has some nice surprises in store for you.
Don’t miss the high tide spectacle
The Bay of Saint-Brieuc is undoubtedly one of Brittany's great secrets. During high tidal coefficients, at low water, the sea retreats up to more than 4 miles, revealing a seabed sculpted in ripples and dotted with puddles in which the sky and clouds are reflected, a landscape that can be truly stunning when the sun is out there.
It is also one of the most important ornithological reserves in France, frequented by more than a hundred different bird species. During a walk at the Légué Port, it is not uncommon to see crested grebes patrolling the water, oystercatchers searching the mud for their food, and elegant curlews flying away as you approach.
The Bay of Saint-Brieuc -
The Rosaires beach -
A must-see for hikers
The bay also offers scenic views along the sentier des douaniers (‘customs trail’ - GR34). Head to the Légué by foot, then take the bridge to get to the other bank. Further along the wharf, Saint-Laurent lighthouse and its small neighbourhood are simply charming.
After a beautiful beach and a fairly steep climb, you will reach the Pointe des Rosaires, which offers a wide panorama stretching from the western Bréhat archipelago to the Erquy Cape at the East. You may see some paragliders launch from this cliff top.
Go ahead and discover Martin-Plage, recognizable by its rock surmounted by a white cross. It is one of the best fishing sites in the area. The French love la pêche à pied, literally fishing on foot, and at low tide, you’ll see a lot of people armed with rakes and buckets invade the beaches to dig and scratch in search for shellfish, shrimps, scallops, crabs and even lobsters for the more fortunate.
A little further on, you will get to the beautiful beach of Les Rosaires, a large sweep of golden sand, probably the favourite beach of the locals.
