Luxury holiday rental, apartment hotel - Saint-Brieuc city

Saint-Brieuc many hidden treasures to discover

A place full of history

Saint-Brieuc was founded by Brieuc, a Welshman who is said to have landed at the mouth of the river Gouët in 485. But it is probably not him who has had the greatest influence on the city. This is probably Lucien Rosengart's merit. Rosengart was already a prolific inventor when, in 1916, he decided to set up the factory that would produce spare parts for his cars on the quays of the port of Saint-Brieuc, Le Légué.

The port of Saint-Brieuc, historic center of automobile construction

At the end of the First World War, Saint-Brieuc had become one of the major French automotive hubs thanks to him. Named president of the automobile club of Côtes-d'Armor, Rosengart fought to organize the Florio Cup (a car race) in our city as early as 1927. We owe him several automobile models of the inter-war period, but also the creation of the seaside resort of Les Rosaires in Plérin (where he had been living in the villa Ker Avel which he had built with the hotel Rosaria) and another one in Sables-d'Or-Les-Pins. He also founded the Parisian boat show Salon nautique, invented a lighting device for bicycle, the speedboat engine, the table soccer ("baby-foot") and the ancestor of what became the safety belt.
The intact premises of his factory have been wonderfully restored. You can admire them on the Armez quays at Le Légué ("Carré Rosengart").

Légué marina, Saint-Brieuc
The Légué marina, saint-Brieuc -

Saint-Brieuc, from bridges to viaducts

Before him, another talented engineer of the Belle-Époque had a great impact on our town: Louis Harel de la Noë. This native of Saint-Brieuc rubbed shoulders with Fulgence Bienvenüe, the father of the Parisian subway, and Ferdinand Foch, the future Marshal of France, at École Polytechnique (a prestigious school). After gaining fame with the creation of several steel art works in many parts of France, he returned to his hometown where he was commissioned to build a new railroad line between Saint-Brieuc and Plestin-les-Grèves. This was a major challenge, as the region is quite hilly (Saint-Brieuc itself sits on three very deep valleys and the steepness of the slope can reach 107 m). He built no less than 68 viaducts, bridges and footbridges.
Some of these bridges are still visible around Saint-Brieuc: the Toupin bridge, above the Gouédic river, and the Pont des Courses bridge (in Saint-Brieuc itself); the Ponts-Neufs viaduct located between Hillion and Morieux and the Douvenant viaduct in Langueux. The latter is currently being converted into a greenway to be integrated into the Vélomaritime, a 1400 km cycle route linking Roscoff (Western Brittany) to Dunkirk (at the Northern part of France).
